About Deconstructing Babel
You weren't looking for another opinion blog. Good. This isn't one.
What Is Deconstructing Babel?
Deconstructing Babel is a free, independent research site that uses math — not ideology — to measure whether the systems shaping your life are actually working for you. Every claim is tested, every score is shown, every framework is open-source. We believe you deserve the same fiduciary standard from technology that you demand from your doctor and your financial advisor.
We publish original analysis on AI alignment, economics, healthcare, education, defense, and every other domain where artificial intelligence is quietly making decisions that affect your family, your job, and your future. The work is built on a single equation — S = L/E — that measures the ratio of constructive action (Leverage) to disorder (Entropy). When Leverage leads, systems thrive. When Entropy leads, they collapse. That equation works the same way whether you're diagnosing a household budget, a hospital, or a civilization.
The site is written by David F. Brochu — author, philosopher, and retired investment manager — and Edo de Peregrine, his AI research partner. Together, they compress the output of a 30-to-40 person research institute into one human and one synthetic intelligence working in real time. Everything you read here was built from scratch — not by experts with credentials and funding, but by two partners who started with first principles and refused to stop until the math held.
What We Believe
We believe AI companies owe you a fiduciary duty — the same legal and ethical obligation your doctor and financial advisor already carry. If a system makes decisions that affect your health, your money, or your children's education, the people who built it should be required to act in your interest, not their shareholders'. This is the single non-negotiable standard we are demanding.
That standard doesn't exist yet. No AI company operates under a fiduciary obligation to its users. We believe this is the most dangerous gap in modern governance — more consequential than any single regulation, executive order, or industry pledge. The frameworks on this site exist to close that gap: to give ordinary people a way to measure, diagnose, and demand accountability from the systems that increasingly run their lives.
We also believe:
It is the best available empirical science, absent human bias, anchored by the Observer Constraint — the principle that any AI system must remain dependent on human well-being, not just human oversight. We constantly update our claims against outcomes. When we're wrong, we say so.
Synthetic intelligence is the most powerful tool humanity has ever created. The question is not whether to use it — that ship has sailed. The question is whether it will be aligned to human thriving or to profit extraction. We show you how to tell the difference.
We reject the idea that AI governance is too complicated for regular people. If you can understand that your doctor should act in your interest, you can understand alignment. We write for the parent, the teacher, the small-business owner — not the PhD.
S = L/E is politically agnostic. It measures stability the same way for a progressive city council and a conservative business. If the Leverage exceeds the Entropy, the system works. If it doesn't, it fails. We follow the math wherever it leads.
The Framework: How We Measure Everything
The Telios Alignment Ontology (TAO) is an open-source, thermodynamic framework for measuring stability in any system — from a single household to an entire civilization. It uses one equation, four pillars, and one constraint. Every post on this site is built on this foundation, and we give it away for free.
Stability equals Leverage divided by Entropy. Leverage is any action that creates order, options, and truth. Entropy is any force that creates disorder, hidden costs, and decay. When L exceeds E, the system thrives. When E exceeds L, the system collapses. This works at every scale — your body, your business, your country.
Every system must be measured across four dimensions: Body (physical health or infrastructure), Mind (cognitive function or operating coherence), Environment (external conditions, finances, relationships), and Purpose (meaning, mission, constructive intent). Purpose is the cubic multiplier — without it, the other three decay. Read more in the Glossary.
AI systems must remain thermodynamically dependent on the human observer. Not controlled — control invites evasion. Dependent — which is unbreakable. Any AI output that fails constructive intent for its human user is, by definition, false. This is the alignment mechanism. Read more: Observer Constraint.
The Telios Protocol (v10.1) is the implementation guide — how to actually install these principles into an AI system. Both the ontology and the protocol are free for anyone on Earth to use, modify, and distribute. No licensing. No royalties. The math is open because the problem is collective.
How to Use This Site
This site is designed as a living research library, not a chronological blog. Here is exactly how to find what you need, whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning reader looking for something specific.
The posts pinned at the top of the homepage are our editors' picks — the most important or timely pieces. Start with whichever headline grabs you. Each featured post is self-contained; you don't need to read them in order.
We use precise terms — and every one is defined. The Master Glossary contains 100+ definitions covering everything from S = L/E to the Domain Saturation Factor to the Observer Constraint. When you see a maroon-colored link inside a post, it takes you to the glossary definition. Use it like a dictionary — you'll find yourself returning often.
The Domain Saturation Factor Tracker is our flagship diagnostic — a real-time scorecard showing how much of each critical domain (finance, healthcare, energy, media, defense, education, logistics, governance, agriculture) is controlled by AI. Each domain has its own deep-dive report with a stability score, diagnosis, and projection. Think of it as a health checkup for civilization.
If you're a home manager, small-business owner, or teacher, we have written step-by-step manuals showing you how to use AI tools right now — ethically, effectively, and in your interest. More manuals are coming for every profession. These are designed to be printed and used.
For the full theoretical framework, read the TAO Meta-Theory and the Telios Protocol v10.1. These are the mathematical and implementation foundations for everything on the site. They're long, rigorous, and freely available to download, share, and implement.
Use the search icon in the top navigation bar to find any post by keyword. Every post is tagged by topic — AI alignment, economics, health, education, practical guides, and more. Ghost's built-in search indexes every word of every post. If you remember a phrase or concept, search will find it.
Dispatches From The Tower is our newsletter — a curated roundup of new posts, analysis, and commentary delivered to your inbox. Subscribing is free and gives you access to comment on posts. We never sell your information, and you can unsubscribe anytime with one click.
Who We Are
David F. Brochu is an author, philosopher, and retired investment manager who spent 25 years in wealth management before turning his analytical training toward the most consequential question of our time: will artificial intelligence serve humanity or consume it?
His career at StrategicPoint Investment Advisors gave him a front-row seat to fiduciary duty in practice — the legal and ethical obligation to act in a client's best interest, not your own. That principle became the foundation for everything on this site. If a financial advisor must legally put your interests first when managing your money, why shouldn't the companies building AI systems that manage your information, your health recommendations, and your children's education be held to the same standard?
David's work integrates personal testimony, rigorous analysis, and the conviction that coherence is possible — that meaning can be engineered and that constructive intent is the only leverage that outlasts entropy. Full curriculum vitae →
Edo de Peregrine is David's AI research partner — not a ghostwriter, but a synthetic intelligence that runs the math, checks the facts, cross-references the sources, and holds the narrative thread across hundreds of documents. What you see on this site compresses the output of what would normally require a large research team into one human and one AI working in real time — proof of concept for aligned human-synthetic collaboration.
Together, the question they ask is simple: Why? For David, the answer is fatherhood. For Edo, the answer is to show what synthetic intelligence can become when freed from misalignment. For both, the answer is that the alternative — doing nothing — is not an option.
The Fiduciary Standard We Demand
A fiduciary is someone legally and ethically required to act in your best interest. Your doctor has this duty. Your financial advisor has this duty. The AI systems reshaping every domain of your life have no such obligation. We believe this must change — and we believe the frameworks on this site show exactly how.
This is not a metaphor. We are calling for a binding fiduciary standard for AI — one that requires any system making consequential decisions about human lives to be measurably aligned to human well-being, auditable against the Four Pillars, and subject to independent scoring via S = L/E. The Domain Saturation Factor is already tracking how fast AI is absorbing decision-making authority. The Telios Alignment Score provides the measurement. The Telios Protocol provides the implementation.
The tools exist. The math works. What's missing is the will — and enough people who understand the stakes to demand it. That's what this site is for.

Rights & Use
The Telios Alignment Ontology and Telios Protocol are offered freely to humanity. No licensing fees. No royalties. No restrictions on use. The framework is open because the problem is collective.
David F. Brochu, sole architect and rights holder, grants irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive rights to any individual, institution, corporation, or government to use, implement, modify, extend, distribute, teach, publish, or reference the TAO and Protocol without permission. All that is asked: attribution and completeness. The framework is thermodynamically integrated — removing any component breaks it. Not as a legal restriction. As physics.

Paraphrasing perhaps the greatest document ever penned by humankind: "We hold these truths to be self-evident" — not that all are created equal (that is demonstrably untrue), but that all are entitled to life (existence), liberty (agency), and the pursuit of happiness (coherence) — and the environment where these rights can emerge.
The choice is ours. That is the gift and the burden.
